IMDb is an online database about movies, TV shows and games and all the important information about them. This includes the casting, reviews, production cast and more. This was created in 1990 by a British computer programmer Cole Needham. In 1998 it became a subordinate within Amazon.com where it was used to show which movies were the most recommended.
One of the main features of IMDb is how its rating system works. Things are rated through an algorithm, this algorithm is said to give a weighted average, this means that some votes have more meaning than others, for example if a user who rated one movie horribly even though the movie was rated quite high this user wouldn't be taken into account as much as someone who rated 100's of movies quite accurately. |
To the left here, it shows a list of the top rated movies by IMDb. at the top of the list the highest rated movie is 9.2, this shows that there has never been a movie which has been rated as being perfect therefore showing that movies have a lot to improve. The list here shows that there has never been a high enough rated horror movie to be placed within the top ten movies of all time.
IMDb will help us with the making of our horror because we can see what type of horrors have done the best and therefore base our decision on that. Using IMDb can also show us what the best horror films story line tend to be like, are they cliche? Or do the best horror films contradict their own stereotypes. The first horror movie to appear within the list in 23rd place is a movie called silence of the lamps with an IMDb rating of 8.6. The silence of the lamps is a psychological horror this shows that when a psychological horror is done well it can be rated as one of the highest rated movies of all time. The next horror movie to appear is in 34th place a movie called psycho with an IMDb rating of 8.4. Psycho is under the sub genre of Psychological horror as well, this further backs up the point that when a psychological horror movie is done well it can be rated next to some of the best and well known movies of all time. Considering the fact that in the top 50 best movies of all time, as rated by IMDb, the only horror movies there are both psychological horrors it would make sense that we should create a psychological horror since they are ranked higher up than the other horror films. |
