Linear Script: To follow a series of events in real time without the use of flashbacks or flash-forwards.
Non Linear Script: A disjointed narrative. Non Linear can contain a series of events which a not in order so Flashbacks.
Symbolic: A series of scenes which objects are used to symbolise the order of events.
An example of a linear script would be silence of the lambs. This film follows a series of events in real time without the use of flashbacks or flash-forwards. In this opening title scene we the women climbing up the hill and running the forest. This is set in the present and what you see is what is happening at the time. Another example of a linear script would be The Ring.
An example of a non linear script would be Sinister. We see this in the opening scene as the storyline is unclear. The opening scene starts with an event which happened in the middle of the film. This makes the film disjointed and uses the use of flashbacks to disrupt the film. Another example of an non linear script is house at the end of the street.
An example of a symbolic script would be se7en. This is where we see objects symbolising the events going to happen. We see short clips of the events going to occur. Another example of a symbolic script is American Horror Story: season 5, opening scene. Here we see a series of events which may occur throughout the film. They use small clips of objects to symbolise the events around the corner.
