How Does Your Opening Title Sequence Use, Develop or Challenge Forms and Conventions of Real Media Products?
With our OTS we looked at 2 different shows within the film and TV industry and also looked at the work of horror theorists to see how we could make it have a lasting impact. With how successful the two we used for inspiration were, we hoped to incorporate elements of them into our OTS and make it equally as good.
Our opening title sequence featured an Organ Trafficker hunting down, killing and packaging human organs. Below is a running commentary of which parts were inspired by what.

This is followed by a cut to a black screen and the commencing of the titles. For each title we decided to use a glitching visual affect and a fuzzing sound effect to make it seem like corrupt footage and to break things up into something a lot less linear. This adds to the sense of mystery and the fact the audience have no idea what is going on at first, leading up to the reveal of the main title.
2 Main Inspirations -
DEXTER |
As mentioned in the running commentary above, one of our main influences was the bathtub body scene from the serial killer TV drama, Dexter. We took the following from it:
|
SEVERENCE
In the very first few moments of our OTS we drew inspiration from the 2006 movie Severance. This can be seen with the main female character being chased without any known context at first, exactly like the Severance OTS does but with multiple characters to build tension. We hoped that having this same sort of high octane chase in our OTS would keep the audience interested long enough for them to see the main focus ( The Organ Reaper and their 'trade'). |
Horror Theorists and Their Impact -
Wheeler Winston Dixon
Influenced our OTS with the theory that using characters as 'sites of activity' makes for a more exciting and immersive film. This can be seen in our video with the large use of body horror throughout, such as the packaging of a human heart. |
Carol Clover
Impacted our OTS with the theory of 3 main components for a good horror. Men, women and chainsaws. The man in this case was the killer and the female protagonist can be seen running. The use of chainsaws or any use of weapons is heavily implied but due to our OTS not being linear it did not need to be included. |
